But why does Christ bear his scars still? He conquered the grave. Hell could not hold on to him. The tomb could not contain him past the third day. He went down to hell and made war with spiritual wickedness, you all know how that ended, he made an open show of them and marched them naked through the streets of hell. That is the resurrection story! Christ conquered it all for me and for you.
But one thing remained unconquered, his SCARS.
The scars left by the nail that pierced the palms of his hands. The scars left by the nails that pierced his feet and the hole by his side. He said it was finished, but he carried the scars even in his resurrected body. You’d expect that one of the perks of having a resurrected body would be the absence of scars that plagued the earthly body, but Jesus carried his scars still.
How does an imperfection such as scars fit into an otherwise perfect resurrection story?
Let me share with you 5 reasons why I think Christ Jesus still carries his scars.
1- His SCARs proved He was wounded.
Isaiah 53:5 KJV. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Like you and I, Christ suffered. He knows what it is to suffer.
2- His SCARs proved His sacrificial love for YOU.
John 20:27 NIV. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” John 20:27 NIV
3- His SCARS are an emblem of our victory.
Revelation 5:12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.
Christ wears his scars like ornaments, a reminder of what he suffered for you and an emblem of the victory he achieved for you.
4- His SCARs indicate the FINISHED work.
John 19:30. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Yes, the hurt is over, the wound of sin is closed, and the work of your salvation is complete!
5- His SCARs remind heavens of His sacrifice.
Revelation 5: 6 Amp. And there between the throne (with the four living creatures) and among the elders, I saw a Lamb (Christ) standing, [bearing scars and wounds] as though it had been slain, with seven horns (complete power) and with seven eyes (complete knowledge), which are the seven Spirits of God who have been sent [on duty] into all the earth.
Our great high priest still intercedes for us before the throne of God above and His scars say a lot on our behalf.
So this resurrection Sunday, you and I have to be thankful for the scar Christ bears.
